Interior designers are welcoming the opportunity to fling open the doors of the nursery and let the softer hues out and into the grown-up’s playground. The great thing about these saccharine sweet swatches is their versatility. Take Carlucci’s soft lavender armchair upholstery: a welcome spruce of colour in a modernist monochrome pad, and happily at home in a more multi-colour interior. Or Versace’s pale rose side chair; there’s not much this soft shade will clash with.

There are a few important factors to consider when selecting any sofa; not least of which the level of traffic your precious new arrival will have to endure. Beaumont & Fletcher’s buttoned lemon-butter sofa’s delicate upholstery isn’t going to make a good bedfellow for kiddies’ grubby little hands. That said, fabric protector treatments have come a long way. Opting to buy into the pastel posy by way of a side chair can be less heart-wrenching, as the hardest work it will have to do is act as an occasional dumping ground for bags or jackets.

If the prettiness of it all has you breaking out in a cold sweat, take a look at Karim Rashid’s designs for Corian. The durable and incredibly versatile material is sculpted into ski-slope flawless contours and lit gently with pastel lights. Swap between pinkified hues of coral or aquamarine blue with just a flick of the lighting switch. •

How did you come into music?

Since I was a child, I’ve been familiar with music because many members of my family were musicians. There were 15 of us, living together at home and my mother was a singer and an actress of village repute. I grew up with more than one role model and was free to learn from every one of them. I think it’s a marvellous opportunity to benefit and grow from such an experience. I consider myself to be a continuity of all of them. My music is a mix of blues, jazz, rock, folk, reggae, African blues, Black American, Moroccan traditional, Portuguese, and Mediterranean genres!

Which singer influenced you the most during your carrier?

I was always impressed by the stage performances of Tina Turner, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Oum Kalthoum, Yma Sumac and Amália Rodriguez, not forgetting James Brown, Michael Jackson, and Abdel Halim Hafez. I believe that singing is an energy that comes from the stomach, from within. It is so strong that it can abolish the limits between sexes, nations and cultures.

Do your songs speak to women?

When I sing, I talk to all people. I think plurality and different ways of being crafts the richness of our world. Culture is a part of each one of our own selves. It is made of several stratas consisting of family, personal experiences, and influences. Sound is the only way for me to express my emotions.

Did you find obstacles along your path to success?

Of course! But I think that obstacles give us the opportunity to meditate. When I face a problem, I ask myself, “What does it say about my current life?” I try to understand the reason behind it in order to resolve it. Obstacles make me older, stronger and more experienced. Sometimes happiness is the result of having been able to go above and beyond a problem.

What is ‘so unfair’ to you?

If the world is full of injustice, that’s just the way it is! We have to admit that the human being is not able to be as broad-minded as he desires. But what is most unfair is when children arrive in the world and they can’t find what they need. •
